What Counts as an Emergency

The Electrical Problems That Cannot Wait

Some electrical problems are an inconvenience. These are not. If any of the items below is happening in your house, turn the main breaker off if you can reach it safely, keep people and pets away from the area, and call. If you see downed lines, smell gas or see open flame, call 911 and the utility first. The problems that should not wait for Monday:

  • Burning smell, scorch marks or smoke At the panel, an outlet, a switch or a light fixture. An overheated connection is a fire in progress.
  • Sparking or arcing From an outlet, a cord, the panel or the meter. Stop using the circuit and call.
  • Half the house dead, lights bright and dim A lost neutral or a dropped leg at the service. It destroys electronics and appliances within minutes of continuing.
  • Breaker that will not reset, or trips immediately A fault on the circuit or a failed breaker. Do not keep resetting it.
  • Water in the panel or at a meter base After a storm, a roof leak or a flood. The service is not safe to energize until an electrician has looked.
  • No power when the neighbors have power The problem is at your service, your meter or your panel, and the utility will tell you to call an electrician.

Nights and weekends are a normal part of our week, and a real person answers the phone.

A burning smell at the panel is at the top of that list for good reason. One Friday evening in July, a Fairhope homeowner lost power to all three of his air conditioners and smelled something burning at an outside panel. A person answered our line and put him straight through to the electrician on duty, who was at the house that night and made the repairs.

If you smell burning, see scorch marks or hear buzzing at the panel, turn the main breaker off and call. Those are not wait-until-Monday problems.

After-hours emergency fee: $360, which covers the first two hours of work; if the repair will take longer, the technician gives you the price before going on. During the week, a visit is a flat $175 diagnostic fee that covers the first hour.

What We Fix

Emergency Electrical Repairs We Handle

✓

Panel & Breaker Failures

Mains that will not reset, breakers that trip under no load, bus damage and overheated lugs. Repaired or replaced, permitted where required.

✓

Lost Neutrals & Half-the-House-Dead

The post-storm classic: one leg of the service drops or the neutral opens. We isolate it, protect what is still working and coordinate the utility repair.

✓

Burning Outlets, Switches & Fixtures

The device is replaced, the circuit is traced for the real cause, and aluminum or backstabbed connections are corrected properly.

✓

Storm Damage: Masts, Meter Bases & Drops

A bent mast or a meter base off the wall has to be repaired by a licensed electrician before the utility reconnects. We do it and handle the release.

✓

Water Intrusion & Flooded Equipment

Panels, receptacles and wiring that were under water are replaced, not dried out, and the replacement goes above the water line where the house allows.

✓

Generator Failures During an Outage

Standby or portable: no start, no transfer, running but the house is dark. Any brand, and we are a certified Generac dealer.

Before We Arrive

What to Do While You Wait for the Electrician

Turn the main breaker off if the problem involves burning, sparking, water or bright-and-dim lights, and leave it off. Do not reset a breaker more than once. If a portable generator is plugged into a dryer outlet or any receptacle, unplug it now: back-feeding kills utility linemen and destroys the generator when the grid returns.

Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances if you suspect a lost neutral, because the half of the house that still has power may be getting 180 volts. Keep everyone away from the panel and the meter. Then tell us on the phone exactly what you saw, smelled and heard; it tells the electrician what to bring.

Shutting the power off first is the right instinct. On the Friday before the Fourth of July, a Lucedale homeowner's air conditioner drain backed up again, and the water reached the electrical nearby and shorted it out with sparks. He had already shut everything off by the time he called us. An electrician was out that night and took care of both the electrical damage and the air conditioner.

Areas We Serve

Emergency Electricians for Mobile, Baldwin and Jackson Counties

Our emergency crews cover Mobile and the whole of Mobile County, from Saraland, Satsuma and Citronelle in the north to Theodore, Grand Bay and Dauphin Island in the south, and the Eastern Shore and Baldwin County from Spanish Fort, Daphne and Fairhope down to Foley, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Jackson County, Mississippi is covered from the same shop. Response time depends on where the truck is when you call; we tell you honestly and we do not promise what we cannot do.

After a named storm the emergency line runs around the clock, and we get to the most dangerous situations first, then everyone else in the order they reached us. Masts and meter bases, flooded panels and lost neutrals come first because the utility cannot reconnect until they are fixed.

Baldwin County nights and weekends are covered the same way. On a hot Saturday in July, the breaker on a Gulf Shores RV pedestal burned up and took the air conditioner with it, the same morning the owner's wife came home from the hospital. He called after hours, and an electrician was out that night to replace the breaker.

The problem is traced to its source and explained in plain English, along with the price to fix it, in writing, before any work starts. The visit starts with a flat diagnostic fee that covers the first hour; after hours the emergency fee covers the first two.

3

Fix, install, inspect

Repairs usually finish the same visit. Replacements and upgrades are scheduled, permitted where required, and inspected.

What Customers Say After an Emergency Repair

★★★★★

"Came home late afternoon to find my power off. I called after hours and Robby was over in 15 min. It was a bad circuit breaker. From the time I saw I had no power til the time I had power back on was around 30 min. Amazing. Super nice guys as well."

★★★★★

"I heard crackling noises behind my washer/dryer. I called Professional Systems on a Sunday, spoke to a live human, and they came out the next morning, right on time. They found the dryer receptacle was a 15 amp receptacle on a 20 amp circuit with loose connections, changed it and made the proper connections as I have aluminum wiring."

— Jo S., Google review
★★★★★

"They diagnosed a power issue that other companies weren't able to. The technician was extremely knowledgeable and professional, and explained everything very well. Also, I called them at 8 at night and got a human being on the phone!"

Questions & Answers

Emergency Electrical Service: Questions We Hear

Is a tripping breaker an emergency?

A breaker that trips once and resets is a sign of a problem to schedule. A breaker that will not reset, trips immediately, is warm to the touch or smells is an emergency: leave it off and call.

The lights in half the house are dim and the other half are bright. What is happening?

Almost certainly a lost neutral, which puts the wrong voltage on both halves of the house. Turn the main off, unplug electronics and call. It damages appliances by the minute. Our guide to a house that is half dead after an outage explains it.

How fast can an electrician get here?

It depends on where the truck is and what else is burning that night. We give you an honest window on the phone and update you if it changes, and dangerous situations are worked first.

Do you charge more at night?

After-hours service is quoted when you call, before anyone heads your way, and the repair itself is priced in writing before the work. There are no hidden fees and we do not publish hourly rates because the job, not the clock, sets the price. A real person answers day and night. During business hours it is our office; after hours a live answering service takes your details and puts you through to the technician on duty. Nights, weekends and holidays, the emergency fee is $360 and covers the first two hours of work; if the job will take longer, the technician gives you the price before going further. You hear the fee on the phone before anyone heads your way. On a weekday, a technician's visit is a flat $175 diagnostic fee that covers the first hour at your home or business; parts and anything beyond that are priced in writing before we do them.

The power company says the problem is on my side. What does that mean?

The meter base, the mast, the weather head and everything from the meter into the house belong to the homeowner and must be repaired by a licensed electrician before the utility reconnects. We make the repair, pull the permit where required and send the release.

My generator will not start and the power is out. Can you help tonight?

Yes. A generator that will not start, will not transfer or runs without powering the house is an emergency during an outage, any brand, and the truck carries batteries, common parts and a portable to bridge the gap when it makes sense.
